Video Spotlight:  Salem Distributing

Recently the Road to GlassBuild team went onsite and visited exhibitor Salem Distributing to see everything they do.  So before you visit them at booth 845, here’s a look at their North Carolina location in our video spotlight.

Interview Spotlight: Oliver Stepe, YKK AP

Road: Thank you for being the lead sponsor of the Glazing Executives Forum at GlassBuild America.  YKK has been a very active participant in many industry related events; why is it so important for you to be such a great industry partner?

StepeThe YKK Cycle of Goodness philosophy is rooted in engagement with local communities and industry in which we conduct business, so YKK AP America’s support of glass industry education and events is consistent with our long standing core values. As the industry entered and endured various phases of the financial crisis and support for industry organizations and event’s was challenged, it became apparent that we needed to play a bigger role. It was at that time we stepped up and began sponsoring GEF. We feel that industry events such as GEF and others are vital for the continuing education of the industry community and necessary to assure that industry members remain current with evolving building technologies. If we and others like us can play a small role in assuring that façades remain relevant in the built environment by supporting industry events and initiatives, then it is the calling of us all to do so.     

Road: YKK is always innovating. What are some of the latest and greatest that you and your team have brought to market recently?

StepeAfter a virtual “innovation ice age” in fenestration, emerging codes and standards that challenge the façade industry to be better are a breath of fresh air. In recent years we visualized and were the first in the industry to create an entire family of low U-factor products, enerGfacade. At the same time, demand for our impact resistant line, ProTek, continues to evolve. With that said, I would have to say that one of the recent products we launched and continue to evolve that I am particularly proud of is YUW750XT/H. Some years back we had a dream to create an ultra-flexible, multi-use product that could meet numerous market demands and applications. In its full form, YUW750XT/H will meet low U-factor energy codes and meet impact resistant codes, at the same time! Further, it can be pre-glazed, unitized, and be used for multi-span curtain wall and/or combination ribbon window applications. The product is currently under evolving development and available on a limited project basis. YUW750XT/H has already won numerous architectural industry awards and been used on highly prestigious projects in New York, Boston, and Washington DC. At full market distribution scale, it may be one of our most innovative concepts yet.    

Road: Aside from excellent products and great reputation, YKK is also known for making incredibly creative videos to promote not only what you do but also the lives of people who specify and use your product.  How did this whole process begin and what’s next in the video pipeline?

StepeWe first entered the realm of video production when we launched a Youtube video contest called “Building a Better Tomorrow Today”. The contest ran using various social channels as we encouraged entrants to submit homegrown videos on how to enhance the built environment. It was at that time we assembled an incredibly talented and creative team of internal and external people who started to visualize entire forward campaigns using videos and social networks. This effort has proven to be a very effective means to market products and to not only educate but also entertain target audiences…never mind having lots of fun in the process. Our latest video entitled “I am an Architect” went viral and as of last count has over 300,000 views on the YKK AP Youtube channel. It is the first of a series of videos in the category to be released, some of which we promise will be lots of fun for the glazing contractor community, so stay tuned!
